Mechanism of action
Non-absorbable antacid fast action. The excess bicarbonate acid neutralization is absorbed and excreted in urine, also acting as a systemic and urinary alkalizing. It produces rebound effect.

Therapeutic indications
Gastric hyperacidity. Metabolic acidosis. Alkalizing urine.

Posology
Oral. Antacid: 1 teaspoon of powder, 1 sachet or 1 tab. (500 mg) or 1-2 comp. Effervescent (2081.8 mg) 20 min-1 h after meals or discomfort when they arise. Children> 6 years old: half dose. urinary alkalizing: 3 g / 2h until urinary> pH 7; Maintenance: 1-2 g / 4-6 h. Children: 80-800 mg / kg / day.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, metabolic or respiratory alkalosis, hypocalcaemia, hypochlorhydria, tendency to edema formation, appendicitis or symptoms, intestinal obstruction.

Warnings and Precautions
Kidney failure, cardiac insufficiency, hypertension, liver cirrhosis, toxemia of pregnancy, treatment with diuretics or sodium diet, elderly. Do not administer to children <6 years old.

Kidney failure
Caution accumulation of Na, resulting hypernatremia, fluid retention and even metabolic alkalosis.

Interactions
Decreases excretion: ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, erythromycin, methadone, amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, flecainide, quinidine, mecamylamine.
 Increases excretion of methotrexate, aspirin and salicylates, lithium, and barbiturates.
 Absorption decreases ketoconazole, quinolones, iron salts, tetracyclines.
 It increases absorption: naproxen, AC. valproic acid forms sulfonamide and levodopa.
 Its effectiveness decreases with: methenamine.

Pregnancy
Systemic absorption, is not recommended.

Lactation
Because of its systemic absorption use it is not recommended during lactation.

Adverse reactions
Hypertension, edema, metabolic alkalosis. Milk-alkali syndrome, if high amount of milk ingested.
