WHAT IS BETADINE SKIN SOLUTION
It is an antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiprotozoal sporicidal solution.
The active ingredient of Betadine solution is povidone iodine, a molecular complex that is gradually freeing.
Iodine is a broad spectrum antiseptic that has not yet detected any strain of resistant microbes.
It is used to disinfect wounds, burns, cuts or sores. Also as an antiseptic for hospital use.
COMPOSITION
- Active ingredient: Povidone-iodine (10 g per 100 ml of solution).
- Other components: disodium phosphate, glycerol, citric acid, nonoxynol-9, sodium hydroxide and water.
POSOLOGY
Wash and dry the wound, cut, burn or sore and then applied directly to the affected area of the skin.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
- Do not use in patients with allergy to iodides.
- Do not apply compounds from mercury.
- Do not apply to mucous membranes, eyes or ears
The iodine is absorbed and this can affect thyroid function tests.
Contamination of feces and urine iodine can lead to false positives in screening blood.
In case of prolonged treatment with Betadine it is advisable to test thyroid function.
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
In pregnant or breast-feeding should be used with caution and avoiding prolonged treatment.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
Rarely they have appeared allergic reactions and irritation in the area of application.
Prolonged use or large areas may cause systemic adverse effects: renal dysfunction, metabolic acidosis or hypernatremia.
OVERDOSE
In case of overdose or accidental ingestion may occur: irritation in the area of the skin where the gel has been applied and renal dysfunction, metabolic acidosis or hypernatremia.
Accidental ingestion should be monitoring functions renal and thyroid, as well as acid-base balance.
The antidote to use in case of poisoning is sodium thiosulfate.
