What NorLevo is and what it is used for
NorLevo is an emergency contraceptive.
Emergency contraception is indicated for the prevention of pregnancies after having unprotected sexual intercourse or in case of failure of a contraceptive method (for example: if you have forgotten to take the contraceptive pill at the time; if your partner's condom has been broken or slipped; if you suspect that your intrauterine device has been ejected; if your vaginal diaphragm or cervical cap has moved or if you removed it prematurely; if you are concerned that the coitus interruptus method or rhythm method has failed ...).

Levonorgestrel belongs to a group of medicines called emergency contraceptives.

When should emergency contraception be used?
This contraceptive method should be used as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours and never later than 72 hours (3 days), after having unprotected sex or when the contraceptive method used has failed. It is most effective if you take it as soon as possible after having an unprotected sexual relationship. NorLevo can only prevent pregnancy if you take it within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. It is not effective if you are already pregnant. If you have unprotected sex after taking NorLevo, the medicine will not prevent you from becoming pregnant.
NorLevo works by stopping the release of an egg from your ovaries. Not for the adhesion of a fertilized egg to the uterus.
NorLevo is not a regular contraceptive, and is only indicated as an emergency contraceptive.
Norlevo is not indicated for use before the first menstruation (menarche).

How to take NorLevo
Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have doubts.
The recommended dose of NorLevo is 1 tablet.
Take the tablet as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours, and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after having unprotected sex. Do not delay taking the tablet. This medicine works best the sooner you take it after having unprotected sex. You can only prevent getting pregnant if you take it within 72 hours after having unprotected sex.

If you are using one of the medicines that can prevent NorLevo from working properly (see section "Using other medicines and NorLevo") or if you have used one of these medicines in the last 4 weeks, NorLevo may be less effective for you. Your doctor may prescribe another type of emergency contraception (non-hormonal), that is, a copper intrauterine device (Cu-IUD). If this is not an option for you or if you cannot see your doctor quickly, you can take a double dose of NorLevo (i.e. 2 tablets taken at the same time).
If you are already using a regular method of contraception, such as oral contraceptives, you can continue to take it as regularly.

If you vomit within three hours of taking NorLevo tablet (s), you should take another tablet immediately (or two other tablets if you are taking one of the medicines that can prevent Norlevo from working properly, see section "Using other medicines and NorLevo, above). Contact your doctor or pharmacist to get another tablet (s).

After using this emergency contraceptive method, it is recommended to use a barrier contraceptive method (condom, spermicide, cervical cap) until the beginning of the next menstrual cycle. If you have unprotected sex after taking NorLevo (during the same menstrual cycle), you are at risk for pregnancy again. The use of NorLevo is not contraindicated to continue with regular hormonal contraception.

If you have taken this medicine while you were using an oral contraceptive (birth control pill), you should continue taking the tablets until the end of treatment, in the usual way. In case of not having menstrual bleeding in the rest period of taking the pill, a pregnancy test should be performed to exclude possible pregnancy.

Your doctor may advise you of long-term contraceptive methods since they are more effective in preventing pregnancy.

If you continue to use regular hormonal contraception such as the birth control pill, and you do not have bleeding during your pill break period, contact your doctor to confirm that you are not pregnant.

After using NorLevo, your cycle is usually normal and will start on the usual day; however, sometimes it can be advanced or delayed a few days.
